Carrie’s Chitchats

I forgot I had this little chitchat series I created a while ago when I feel I have nothing in particular to write about but still want to chat so here I am.

We’re back into the swing of things after a week-long winter break from school. Our family, along with some family friends, headed up to the snow and did some tubing, hiking (see pic above), and lounging at a rented cabin. I oftentimes will dread a big break from school and the structure/routine of school but last week was surprisingly very enjoyable and I soaked up all of our together time. During the trip, my 2 girlfriends and I marveled at how well our children get along- they range in age from 3 to almost 10 and, despite the age gap, they play so beautifully together. We feel lucky to have that.

We’re gearing up for a busy spring over here with activities starting up (soccer & T-ball, in addition to dance), guests coming, and a social calendar that’s starting to fill up and I can feel my introverted-self start to get a bit grumpy. I know I’m doing what’s best for our family/kids but sometimes being an introverted parent is tough. You want to be social, plan activities & get togethers for your kids, and make solid connections in your community but I’d rather be hanging at home. Like everything else though, it’s a season and perhaps when the summertime comes and our schedule is less jam-packed, I may look back on this time and long for the craziness.

Have a great weekend!

Wear What’s In Your Closet: A Series

I recently saw an influencer post a reel about shopping her closet to come up with some cute looks and loved the idea. I’m on a saving spree right now- things like brewing your own coffee, ordering less takeout, and shopping your closet are great ways to save money & get creative. I love looking in my pantry to see what I can make with the ingredients I have on hand and applying this to your closet feels equally fun.

So I snapped this picture in a rush while I was getting ready for an annual favorite things party with my best girlfriends. The pic is blurry, there’s smudges on the mirror and the bedroom situation ain’t looking the best but you know what? In 2025, I’m doing the things I want to do even though they’re not perfect (and probably never will be). I’m not going to wait until I have the flawless picture or the room is immaculate because then this post will be sitting in my drafts and will never reach my 2 blog readers. So this year, (and this Valentine’s Day!), in addition to saving money, I’m encouraging you to stop waiting until things are perfect to do the things you want to do or accomplish those goals you’ve always dreamed of. Life is short but sweet for certain. XOXO

Going to link what I can from this shop my closet look:

My 5 Favorite Trader Joe’s Items

A few months ago, I went to Trader Joe’s with my friend in an attempt to delve outside my comfort zone and explore products I wouldn’t necessarily choose myself. I find that whenever I go grocery shopping, I always reach for the same products so I figured inviting a friend could help change that! I’ve done this with my sister too and it’s so fun to swap recipe ideas and get real-time reviews on food items. Perhaps in the future I’ll have said friend or sister do a guest post on their favored items but for now here are my go-tos:

  1. Mandarin Orange Chicken: I love having bags of this in my freezer for an easy weeknight dinner. The kids crush this chicken and I typically pair it with sticky rice, air-fried broccoli, and seaweed. Chef’s kiss!
  2. Rice Orzo Pilaf Mix: I believe my sister introduced me to this item and I’ve been a die-hard ever since. The flavor is so delightful using butter and water but you can also make it a little richer by subbing chicken broth for the water. This is also kid/toddler approved and I’ll make this with a veggie and a protein (typically chicken thighs) as another weeknight dinner win!
  3. Original Savory Thin Crackers: These crackers remind me of Nut-Thins- they’re light and delicious and I’ll often load them up with tuna or egg salad for an easy, high protein lunch. I add these to the kids’ lunches as well and they also come in a bagged version of mini crackers.
  4. Hold the Cone mini ice cream cones: I have at least one box of these in my freezer at all times. They’re a great little treat for kids and adults alike and you can’t go wrong with any of the flavors. I personally appreciate these for portion control as I tend to go off the rails if I have a pint/gallon of ice cream calling my name from the depths of my freezer. TJs recently came out with strawberry minis which are delightful!
  5. Cheese: I’m going broad here but the cheese at Trader Joe’s is top notch and I always love venturing into the cheese area to discover something new or new-to-me. I currently have a bag of Unexpected Cheddar in my fridge which I’ve been adding to my salad but others I’ve tried and loved include: burrata, triple cream brie, manchego, colby-jack sticks, chevre goat cheese…I mentioned the burrata right? Add it to your eggs, salads, pizza, skincare routine (jk?), etc. Ya just can’t go wrong with any of them in my book.

I’d love to hear what YOUR favorite Trader Joe’s products are!

5 Things I’m Into Right Now

It’s been awhile but here I am again, feeling the need to express my creativity in the form of writing. Summer has been great so far with lots of fun outings with the kids and meeting up with friends & neighbors. Here are 5 things I’m into right now:

  • No social media until naps: lately I’ve noticed a habitual need to check my phone, scroll social media, refresh emails etc. from the minute I wake up. It’s caused me to become an impatient, not so great parent and I knew I needed a solution that didn’t involve completely deleting my apps (since that hasn’t worked in the past). I came up with the idea of not opening social media until my son’s nap & my daughter’s quiet time, usually around 1pm. This has been a game changer in terms of being less irritated and being more present for my kids. The break from my phone makes me a lighter, happier person and I hope it’s something I can continue.
  • Family game night: in perpetuating the decrease in phone/screens usage, my husband & I like to have a weekly family game night. Each person (2 adults, 2 kids) chooses a game to bring to the table and we’ll play each game once while enjoying a yummy snack like popcorn. It’s so fun to see the kids’ personalities come out in games like charades and watching my 2-year-old tightly close his eyes as he reaches into the bag to pull out a Bingo token is priceless.
  • “Whatever’s in the fridge” salads: my friend has been posting salad pics to our chat thread and she’s always been good at using whatever’s in the fridge to compile them. Potato chips, a random veggie, some fruit about to go bad- you name it, she’s added it to her concoctions. So with that inspiration, I went to Trader Joe’s to buy some fixings and, along with my fridge findings came up with this week’s salad: grilled chicken, avocado, fried eggs, beets, red onion, crispy jalapeno pieces, edamame beans, mozzarella cheese balls, topped with oil & vinegar.
  • Cup of Jo blog: I miss the days where people consistently blogged for the fun of it, to voice their thoughts, to let us in on a sliver of their lives. With Instagram stories came a quick ability for influencers & content creators to share a link to a product they loved, making them quick money and cutting out the middleman (blogs). I love visiting Jo’s blog everyday because the stories and shares (yes, some of them products!), always seem so genuine and the loyal readers she’s amassed over the years leave thoughtful comments I always look forward to reading. Side note: the idea for this post was inspired by her blog…thanks Jo!
  • Zara pants: I bought these pants last season and have found myself wearing them all summer long. They’re so versatile- wear them with a swimsuit to the pool or pair with a tube top & heels for a night out with the girls (I’ve done both) and you can thank me later. I’ve also done a “sporty” look with my Adidas sambas and a t-shirt tucked in.

I’d love to hear what you’re into right now!

Current Favorites

Last month, my girlfriends and I had our annual favorite things party, one of my most anticipated days of the year. Full of good friends, food, cozy clothes, and presents, what’s not to love? I thought it would be fun for me to do a favorite things post every so often for what I’m currently into. Without further ado…

Mel Robbins podcast: I stumbled upon Mel Robbins most likely from my Instagram explore page and I’m so happy I did. Her podcast is filled with episodes like building better habits, nutrition guidance, improving mental health, relationship advice, and so much more. She brings on the experts pertinent to the topic at hand and you truly believe she wants the best for you, her listeners. Mel is very uplifting & motivating and its a great podcast to check out especially if you’re wanting change & improvement in your life.

Libby app: if only I had listened to friends who told me to download this app years ago, I’d probably have more $$ in the bank. If you have a library card, you can borrow ebooks from the library and have them automatically download through a reading app like Kindle for free. There’s no catch here, aside from the fact that for popular, best-selling books, there’s often a waitlist. However, you can “hold” up to 10 books at a time with varying waitlists and while you’re in the midst of a borrowed book and another one on your list becomes available, you can simply delay borrowing that one until you’re ready. The next person in line is then able to borrow that book and depending on the length of delay (in days), you will be placed in line accordingly. For an avid book reader like me, this is heaven.

Pretty Frank deodorant: recently my husband went on a journey of cleaner living and one of his changes was moving from Old Spice deodorant to Pretty Frank. Pretty Frank is free of aluminum and parabens, scent-free, and best of all, it works! As the head of laundry in our household, my husband’s shirts would always reek of smell and I noticed that this was no longer the case once he made the switch. I myself have never found a deodorant to combat stress stink despite trying tons of different brands so I was intrigued. I started using it and low and behold, it really does work. Not sure if its a universally great deodorant or if it just works well with our body chemistry but if you’re still on the hunt for an effective deodorant, definitely give this a try.

Books: Pachinko was a book gifted to me by my sister-in-law, another fellow book lover. I would say I’m open to any genre but looking at the cover and premise of this book, I don’t know if I would have chosen it for myself. That being said, I gobbled this one up in a week’s time, I loved it so much. Set in the early 1900s, this is a story about a Korean woman who immigrates to Japan to both seek a better life for her family and avoid disgrace. Sunja is an unwed pregnant woman who marries a Japanese minister and starts a new life in Osaka. The historical fiction novel is full of political friction, warfare, and discrimination, while also highlighting the strength & perseverance of women (and mothers in particular). Demon Copperhead was hard for me to get into because of the style of writing but I’m so glad I gave this book another chance. This book follows Damon, a boy born to a single mom who struggles with substance abuse. Set in the 1990s in southern Appalachia, the story details the turbulence and severe neglect of kids in the foster system and Damon’s will to survive despite all odds. The story I described sounds pretty depressing and at times it is because you know this is the reality of many kids in the foster system. But it is peppered with laughs, endearing characters and plenty of adventure. The book was based on the Charles Dicken’s novel, David Copperfield.

New Year, New Me

Misleading title because its actually the same ole me and today I’m on the grumpier side because of sleep deprivation but in an attempt to work on my goals/resolutions/life improvements I wanted to show up here for myself. I love the beginning of the year because I like to review the prior year and get some clarity on what I want for myself and my family in the upcoming year. Welp its off to a rocky start with covid & croup over the holidays and then some sleep regression stuff with 1 kid who shall not be named but the show must go on. So here’s my current resolution wishlist for the year:

  • Less phone time(!!!): Every single day I fall victim to the mindless scrolling on my phone and I absolutely loathe the way it makes me feel. I’m still trying to figure out how to reduce the usage- perhaps I need to just delete certain apps off my phone for part of the day? If you have any tips on this, please send them my way. I long to give my kids the tech-free childhood I had and I hate that they constantly see me with my phone in hand. SOS
  • Stop caring about what other people think: I tend to get caught up in rehashing conversations had, social blunders I feel I may have made, etc and I think reminding myself that NOBODY CARES and they’re too busy focusing on themselves helps keep me in check. Also will this matter in 1 day/week/year? No? Then let’s move on.
  • Be my authentic self no matter the occasion/environment: Being yourself is important, especially if you want to attract friends who love you for you. But also, I want my kids to be confident and I think a good way to show/model confidence is by being true to yourself regardless of the setting.
  • Minimize food waste: I love to cook and while I enjoy making new recipes multiple times a week, I’d like to be better at having a “let’s see what we can make from the contents in the fridge” night or two. I’m often having to toss out food and think I could improve upon getting creative with what I have both in the fridge & freezer.
  • Letting my kids be themselves: I’d like to be better at honoring their little personalities more than (at times) being at odds with them. More celebrating our differences and less nitpicking 🙂
  • Become a writer(!): this last one feels lofty but I’d love to develop a writing side hustle, even if it pays peanuts. I’ve loved writing for as long as I can remember and I’d love to be able to do it while I’m primarily at home right now with the kids. They say if you want something, put it into the universe right? Okay universe, there it is.

That’s more or less the current list and I’m sure I’ll be modifying it in the weeks to come. I’d love to hear from my one reader (LOL), what are your resolutions?

Carrie’s Chitchats

Thanksgiving is over and done with but the 5 lbs I gained over the weekend is still hanging around. I am notorious for going HAM eating-wise during this delicious & indulgent holiday weekend and its good to know that I remain consistent in my eating habits year after year. I stepped on the scale this morning feeling both amused and surprised. And the tests I took over the weekend confirmed that I am in fact not pregnant, just very very hungry. This year I have managed to work out at least 3x/week for 20 minutes every single week and I’d like to close out the year being cognizant of those good habits while reigning in my other habits so all my hard work doesn’t fall to the wayside. I may have mentioned it here before but I’m very anti-diet and prefer to take on a more intuitive approach when it comes to eating. I also believe maintaining a healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean you have to torture/force yourself into doing things you loathe. Find out where in your schedule you can squeeze in some exercise and at what time is optimal. I love waking up early to workout (which is when I have the most energy) and the buzz I get from that exercise seems to last all throughout the day. And do something you can enjoy and look forward to. When it comes to your diet, take an honest look at your habits and how you can modify them to fit your health goals. I would love to eat a pint of ice cream most nights but I know the sugar hangover I’ll feel the next day and the extra fluff I’ll feel on my body isn’t worth it. Instead, I’ll buy the mini Trader Joe’s ice cream cones and have one of those with my kids every now and then. Or when we go get ice cream I’ll treat myself to a sundae. Anyway I think you get the gist of what I’m all about- finding out what works for you and sticking to it. So here are some of the ways I’ll be tightening up my regime for the remainder of 2023:

  • Drinking two 30oz Stanleys/day. Yes I’m admitting my basic-ness when I say I’m a Stanley girly pop. But also have you noticed how much more energy you have when you’re guzzling down water?
  • Getting my 10k steps in/day. Last night I charged up my FApple watch (fake Apple watch) in preparation for holding myself accountable with my steps. Where I’m at right now: 2643. I better get to steppin’.
  • Mindful eating: be more conscious of my hunger/fullness cues. Am I actually hungry when reaching for more food or just bored/emotional/etc? Just having the awareness is super helpful.
  • No eating after 8pm. This is a tough one but I notice I sleep better when I cut out the night eating and I look forward to waking up hungry. I also think the scale is receptive to this one. When I stop eating after 8pm, I tend to lose weight easier. Also a note: I know the scale can be very harming for some people. If that’s the case for you, get rid of it. For me, I use it as a data-gathering tool rather than a way to feel bad about myself.
  • Drinking is reserved for weekends only. Friday-Sunday evening, my husband and I will share a beer or 2. During the holiday season, its easy to let this slide and allow these habits to seep into the weekdays. I told my husband we ain’t doing that anymore. Hopefully my accountability partner will help me stick to it.

That’s all for now. XOXO

Mom Uniform Realized

I’ve talked a bit about outfits on here but realized I rarely post actual photos of myself in them so here ya go. My husband took this pic and I gave him explicit instructions on not including the toys nor kitchen but as the Rolling Stones say, “you can’t always get what you want”. I did get what I needed though which is a wannabe fashion blogger photo of myself after which my sister told me I looked like Michael Jackson. So those fashion blogger dreams are going down the drain. And fast. That’s all for now…

Mom Uniform

Neutrals? For fall? Groundbreaking. Not trying to reinvent the wheel here but I have been wanting to post about my go-to outfits I’ve been living in as of late. Did anyone ask for this post? Nope. Does anyone compliment me on my style while I’m out in the wild (read: Target/Homegoods/school drop-off)? Hard no. Yet here I am, at your service to help with all of your fashion needs. But really, its nice to have an adult uniform, especially when most mornings are loud & chaotic and you’re too busy with your little humans to think about what to wear. I’ve talked about my favorite jeans before and I love pairing them with a Madewell tucked-in tee. Now that its finally getting a little chilly here in California, I’ve been eyeing this long-sleeved one. I’ve been a big fan of Madewell shirts for quite some time- they’re great quality, lots of colors to choose from, and I always seem to reach for them when I want something cute and basic. You can pull the look together with some mules which I think are such a good option when you’re running out the door and ain’t got time for luxuries like putting on socks & tying shoes. But if you do have time for that? These New Balance kicks scream cute n’ sporty mom with a little time to spare, ya know? Pull the look together with this duster if you want to keep it caszh or throw on the faux leather jacket if you plan on speaking to the manager for a discount and need to look the part. Until next time…

Carrie’s Chitcats

I’m back on the blog for my annual post and boy have I missed writing. With 2 young kids, I’ve found it’s become quite challenging to put myself and my interests/hobbies/passions ahead of everything else. On my “days off” I find myself either running a bunch of errands that become such a time suck due to Bay Area traffic or I get pulled into household chores that gotta get done! Now that my kids are a little bit older though (4 and 2), I’ve begun to feel an itch/longing/call from the universe(?) to really try to set aside time for the things that spark joy in my life, which writing has always done for me. Very recently I had a health scare that made me more closely examine my life and what really matters and I guess I just want to work on living a bit more authentically & purposefully. I’ll spare you on going down the rabbit hole of existentialism but there’s nothing like the potential absence of good health to give you the kick in the ass you needed to remind you what’s important. On that note, here are some things, old and new, that I’m into right now.

  • My friends are sick of me preaching about these jeans but I have them in 2 washes and they are a great everyday pair of denim you can dress up or down. True to size!
  • Last year I wrote a post about my skincare routine and can proudly say I’m still following the same routine and feeling great about my skin. This is despite my derm not so subtly asking if I’d like to “take care of those forehead wrinkles?” Aging gracefully baby!
  • It’s nearing the end of 2023 and I’ve recently purchased my first Vuori items. It’s giving you’ve been living under a rock the past several years isn’t it? Nonetheless, I’m very happy with my new jumper & joggers and I want to only wear shirts with a built-in bra for the rest of my life, mmmkay?
  • My husband wanted to take advantage of a 100-day free trial of the Peloton bike around 2ish years ago. I was vehemently against it because I was already “committed” to a workout routine (maybe 2-3 workouts every couple weeks hehe). Welp I’ve been consistently completing three 20 minute workouts every week for the past 2ish years and my husband didn’t even last the trial period. Oh how the tables have turned.
  • Colleen Hoover books. Need I say more? During the aforementioned health scare, I needed to keep my mind off of things and wanted to keep it light: enter CH. Her books really hook you and the storylines are all consuming. The last 3 I’ve read: Confess, Regretting You, and Reminders of Him. So good.

Well that’s all for now! Until next year. xoxo Blogger girl
